Pathophysiology-based Interpretation of Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Management of Cerebral Fat Embolism: Case Report and Review of Literature
نویسندگان
چکیده
Cerebral fat embolism (CFE) is a rare, albeit serious complication of long-bone fractures. CFE results in variable neurological disability, often associated with a significant recovery time. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), particulary diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), is the most sensitive method to establish a diagnosis of CFE, with typical findings of multiple punctate highintensity lesions within the brain parenchyma. The pathophysiology of CFE remains unclear; However, it is considered a direct expression of small vessel occlusion by fat droplets. The authors present a patient with abrupt and profound neurological deterioration after long-bone fractures for which early supportive treatment with rapid diagnostic confirmation using brain MRI led to a significant recovery.

Unusual diagnosis of Von Hippel Lindau syndrome on PET/CT - Case report and brief review of literature
We report an unusual case of a young male with cerebellar hemangioblastoma treated previously for medullary carcinoma of thyroid, whose PET/CT scans revealed a constellation of findings that suggested the rare Von Hippel Lindau syndrome. The diagnosis was clinched by confirming the findings on whole body contrast enhanced computed tomography (CECT) and contrast enha...
متن کاملA Large Solitary Hemangioblastoma of the Lateral Ventricles: A Case Report and Literature Review
Hemangioblastoma (HB) in the supratentorial region of the brain is rare and only a few cases are reported on intraventricular HB. HB of the lateral ventricles is even rarer. We present a case of a 30-year-old man with generalized tonic clonic seizures. The brain computed tomography showed a 5.5 cm heterogeneous mass extending into both lateral ventricles with partial enhancement. Based on the s...
متن کاملCerebral Palsy and Patterns of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): A Review
Cerebral Palsy is the most common chronic motor disorder of childhood, that affecting approximately 3 infants per 1000 live-births. The risk of brain injuries that potentially cause Cerebral Palsy has amplified with increasing in survival rates for preterm infants. In addition Cerebral Palsy has a huge economic impact, to immeasurable health, social, and psychological problems that affected chi...
متن کاملSpontaneous Intracranial Hypotension Plus Cerebral Venous Thrombosis: A Case Report Study
This is a case study of a 34-year-old woman who was admitted to hospital with a history of severe orthostatic headache. She was diagnosed as having spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) by undetectable cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure at lumbar puncture, and with evidence of diffuse dural enhancement of the brain detected by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, the contrast-enhance...
متن کاملGradient-Echo MRI in Defining the Severity of Cerebral Fat Embolism
BACKGROUND A few studies have found that abnormal findings on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are useful for diagnosing cerebral fat embolism in the acute stage. CASE REPORT We applied serial MRI to a case of cerebral fat embolism with cognitive impairment lasting for 2 months. Although marked resolution of the previous abnormal findings was demonstrated, T2*-weighted grad...
